Electric Blankets....... 
are the cause of over 500 fires a year in the UK,

Each year over 20 people are killed due to faulty electric blankets and over 100 people are injured.

Many fires and deaths are due to electric blankets being left on accidentally.

At least 99% of electric blankets fires are caused by electric blankets that are over 10 years old, always check manufacturers instructions and have it serviced once a year.


What to look for.......

When buying an electric blanket ensure it conforms to British & European standard and that is carries a safety certification mark. Always buy new, second hand blankets may not be safe

 






Electric blankets are safe to use!



as long as they are used correctly and you follow the manufacturers instructions.

Make sure the blanket has an overheating protection system, this cuts the power off the blanket if it overheats. All new UK blankets now have this feature.

Make sure the fabric is not worn or frayed and there are no scorch marks on the blanket, flex or plug.

Ensure that the tie tapes supplied are not damaged or missing.
Check the heating wires have not been damaged or displaced. To check, hold the blanket up to the light. The wires should be evenly spaced and should not touch each other anywhere.
   
Portable Heaters

Do not position heaters near to furnishings such as curtains and cushions.

Heaters should never be placed too close to beds or used to dry clothing.

Never sit closer than 3 feet to a heater. 

Gas heaters should be serviced regular to ensure that flues are clean and there are no leaks and should always be done by a CORGI registered engineer. 

   
Open fires should be correctly guarded at all times. Open Fires
Never stack the fire up so much that hot coals or fuel may drop from the fire.
When emptying ashes, be careful of any trip hazards, furniture, loose carpet etc. Always leave ashes to cool before putting them in the bin.
