Remember:- If a fire occurs, the smoke and fumes are the most dangerous part. plan NOW what to do if a fire does happen

 




Before a Fire Happens

* Install Smoke Alarms

* Do they work?

* Can everyone hear them?
 
 

Plan

* The way out if the normal route is blocked

* Keep the door and window keys handy

* Keep all the doors shut

* Shut the doors behind you as you leave



Action

* If a fire occurs get everyone out

* Dial 999, and ask for the Fire Service
 
 



If you are trapped by Fire

* Close the room door

* If there is a phone available dial 999, ask for the Fire Service

* Open the window and shout for help

* If necessary, put bedding along the bottom of the door to stop smoke coming in the room



Breaking a Window

* Hit the bottom corner of the glass with a sharp object

* Remove the loose glass

* Cover remaining glass with bedding or clothing

 
 


Emergency Escape

* Drop the bedding, cushions, etc to the ground below to soften your landing

* Do not JUMP! - Lower yourself from the window by the full length of your arms

* Drop onto the bedding, cushions etc.




Make sure everyone knows their escape route & routine

 when you are out - Stay out

Never return until a Fire Officer has told you it is safe to return
